Welcome back to another carousel quilt pattern. I had made a whole sample quilt for this pattern and by the time I pieced it all together, I wasn’t completely sold on the color palette. So, I decided not to finish an entire quilt in 4 days for the first time in several weeks (lol) and rework the color palette instead. Of course that means I ran out of time this week to make a second sample quilt, but I know you’ll understand. 🤍

The finished quilt measures 60” x 63”.

For the backing fabric you will need 4 yards assuming 4 inches of overage and for the binding you will need 1/2 yard assuming 2 1/2 inch binding strips.

The fabrics used in the cover quilt are Pure Solids and they are listed for you on slide 2. ✨

For backing fabric you will need 4 1/2 yards assuming 4 inches for overage and the binding is included in the fabric allowance for the quilt top (instructions for scrappy binding are in the carousel). If you would like to use a different fabric for binding, you will need 1/2 yards assuming 2 1/2 inch binding strips.

This week, I challenged myself to write and deliver a full quilt pattern in a new way. Welcome to my first carousel quilt pattern.

This quilt is called Loraine, named after my late grandmother.

The finished quilt measures 54” x 60”. You’ll need approximately 1/2 yard for 2 1/2 inch binding and approximately 3 3/4 yards of backing fabric to complete this quilt.

I had just spent a lot of money on a new sewing machine and I’d threaded it all wrong. I tried everything I could think of to fix it, but nothing worked. Out of a combination of sheer determination and sheer desperation, I tapped into the wisdom and generosity that lives within the quilting community. I reached out to a more experienced quilter and asked for help. She walked me through what I needed to do to get going again. In that moment I knew that quilting was for me because I knew it had the power to teach me and to change me.

As a primarily solids quilter I sometimes struggle to incorporate patterned fabric into my work. Stripes are one of my favorite compromises in that regard. They’re simple, clean, and potentially very dynamic.

Do you find yourself more drawn to solid or patterned fabrics? Or some combination of both?

I loved this backing fabric so much, that I couldn’t bear for it to stay hidden on the back of the quilt. So I pulled it to the front and used flange binding with a scrumptious shade of deep purple to give that gorgeous nature motif a little pop.

I adore this quilt. Ever adore a quilt so much that it makes you a little mad?

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the origin of the inspiration photo despite going down a fairly deep internet rabbit hole. If you come across the photo’s origin, let me know. I’d love to thank them for the inspo.

The queen stays queen 💖

People really, really hate that word: alone. Like it’s some kind of disease they don’t want to catch. I wonder where that comes from. Maybe it has something to do with humans being social creatures and people fearing being ostracized by the tribe. I’m sure there were times in human evolution when going it alone was a death sentence - at least, that’s what people say now. But what about the subtext? If the avoidance of aloneness is tied to fear, then what is the desire for aloneness tied to?

After a few hours of rigorous social activity, it might take me days to shed the artifice that seems to be at the heart of social life. It doesn’t feel natural to me to be so agreeable, accommodating, and cooperative while also straining to be engaging and charismatic. It feels like conducting a symphony of other people’s expectations. It’s exhausting.

For me, the desire to be alone is strong. It endures despite all odds. People ask me all the time, “Don’t you get lonely?” My answer is always the same - no, not at all. Aloneness is freedom.

Sometimes I spend hours lamenting all the things I said and did out in the world to smooth sharp edges, to make people feel seen, to manage my own emotions and create as much harmony as I can and it makes me feel embarrassed. I feel a wave of shame crash into me when I realize how incompatible the world outside is with my ease and comfort and how much I feel like I have to perform to even have a sense that I’m allowed to exist there. Out there it’s all mental and emotional gymnastics - jumping, twisting, balancing on a razor’s edge, sticking the landing. Bending over backwards to demonstrate how well I can betray myself.

When I’m alone, I don’t have to talk at all. I might burst into song and dance or tears or laughter. Nothing and everything matters at the same time. There is nothing to explain. Nothing to contextualize. Nothing to apologize for. Nothing to answer for later. No one to annoy. No one to please but myself. No one to soothe. There is no please and thank you. No excuse me. No hierarchy. No competing egos. All that remains are freedom and peace. And they are everything to me.
